Donald Lee Whittaker ’52

Donald Lee Whittaker ’52 passed away on June 9 in his home community of Vero Beach, Florida. Don was born in Shanghai, China, on April 12, 1929, and lived between there and the United States as a youth. His family had a business in China, which was problematic at the time. Part of his pre-college education involved home schooling, but he graduated from the Shanghai-American School and entered Dartmouth. There, Don majored in history and was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon and active in international organizations. Following college Don gravitated toward international responsibilities with the U.S. government in intelligence activities and spent his career there, retiring to Florida in his later years. His government service took him to numerous assignments in Asia, Africa, and Washington, D.C. Don could be considered a renaissance man, with interests in cooking, nature, and flora in his active years as well as in retirement. He met his wife, Martha, while still in college and they had children Donald, Sandra, and Priscilla. His children and five grandchildren survive him.
