DeWalt Hosmer Ankeny Jr. ’54

DeWalt Hosmer Ankeny Jr. ’54 died at home January 18 surrounded by his five children and less than 24 hours after the death of “Margie,” his wife of 67 years. “Pete” grew up in Minneapolis and attended the Blake School before graduating from Phillips Exeter Academy and Dartmouth, where he was a member of Alpha Delta Phi, Dragon, and Phi Beta Kappa. He went on to earn an M.B.A. from Tuck School and a master’s in engineering from Thayer School. In 1955 Peter married Margaret “Margie” Dayton and began his career with Theodore Hamm brewing company in San Francisco until the company was sold to Heublein in 1967. He then joined First National Bank of Minneapolis as an officer in the trust department, rising through the ranks of what became the First Bank System and is today US Bank, to the role of chairman and chief executive officer, a position he held until his retirement in 1989. Through his philanthropy and active participation, he made a difference. He served on the boards of the United Way, the Blake School, the Guthrie Theater, the Schepens Eye Research Institute, and Massachusetts Eye and Ear. He also served as an overseer of Tuck School. An avid sportsman and outdoors man, Pete loved skiing, sailing, tennis, golf, hunting, and fly fishing. Pete is survived by children Don, Harriett, Sally, Chuck, and Phil and their spouses; 21 grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and his brother, Mike.
