David Waller MacNiven Conard ’82

David Waller MacNiven Conard ’82 died unexpectedly at his home in Shelburne, Vermont, on June 24, 2013. David was born in Pittsfield, Massachusetts and raised in Vershire, Vermont, where his parents founded the Mountain School in 1962. At Dartmouth David rowed heavyweight crew and was active in the Dartmouth Outing Club and ski patrol. He was a member of Beta Theta Pi and Sphinx and relished his many college friendships. David wrote in our 25th reunion book: “My life after Dartmouth has truly built on my life at Dartmouth. I have been able to live in beautiful places (Boulder, Burlington) and live, work and play with fun, talented people. No complaints. No regrets.” David graduated from the University of Colorado Law School in 1986. He worked for several law firms, eventually becoming a partner at Langrock, Sperry & Wool in Burlington, Vermont. He was an active member of the community and served on the boards of many local organizations, including the Vermont Youth Conservation Corps, the committee on temporary shelter and the development review board of the Town of Shelburne. David loved skiing, biking, dancing, good wine, his cowboy boots and building things, especially wooden boats. He is survived by his wife, Carol, and children Lindsey, Ian and Addie. A celebration of David’s life was held on July 2, 2013. Classmate Rosi Dupre Littlefield remarked: “I’ve never been to a warmer, more inspiring memorial celebration ever.” Classmate Tom Burack added, “David was a true gentleman, one who could make friends with anyone, who had an insatiable curiosity about practically everything.”
