David S. O’Brien ’57

David S. O’Brien ’57 died on August 29, 2024. David grew up on a sheep farm in rural Virginia, was homeschooled, then attended small private schools. He studied foreign affairs at Dartmouth, was in Phi Kappa Psi, and Cabin & Trail. He transferred to the University of Virginia (UVA), studied medicine, and earned his M.D. in 1963. After completing residencies in Norfolk and Charlottesville, Virginia, he began his career with the U.S. Army Medical Corps in Korea and San Francisco before moving to Annapolis, Maryland, as staff radiologist for Anne Arundel Medical Center. He opened and operated a private radiology practice in Annapolis for many years. In 1993 David married Frances Howell in Annapolis. They moved to Ponte Vedra, Florida, in 2003 and he retired in 2005 after selling his practice to Johns Hopkins Medical Center. Retirement for David did not mean slowing down, as he was busy with the Ponte Vedra Beach Rotary Club; sat on the board of directors for Friends of the Library, St. John’s Council on Aging, and the American Cancer Society of Jacksonville Beach; and served as advisory board chairman for the Players/Palm Valley Senior Center. David and Frances enjoyed traveling around the world and accumulated amazing memories, particularly in England, Switzerland, Ireland, Nepal, Tibet, China, and Africa. David is survived by Frances and sons Christopher and David.
