David P. Barton ’66
David P. Barton ’66, who dedicated his life to the pursuit of world peace and understanding, passed away in Arlington, Virginia, on December 11, 2024. Raised in Silver Spring, Maryland, David was class president at Montgomery Blair High School. He played squash and varsity tennis at Dartmouth and was a member of Delta Upsilon, the Tucker Foundation, and Casque & Gauntlet. After teaching French at Phillips Andover, he earned a master’s from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies. David was codirector of the American Friends (Quaker) Service Quang Ngai Rehabilitation Center in Vietnam from 1970 to 1973, then worked with Amnesty International in the United States and Europe and at the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute. Back in Washington, he spent 17 years with the U.S. House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee and several more with the Arms Control and Disarmament Agency and the U.S. State Department. In 2002 David led an investigative team and helped develop the final report of the congressional review into terrorist events of 9/11. He went on to the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee and then directed a National Academy of Public Administration project for Congress on FBI intelligence work. After retiring David coached the Yorktown High School boys tennis team and taught classes at the George Washington Elliott School of International Affairs. He is survived by Melanie, his wife of 30 years; children Maria and Nicholas; stepson Alex; grandson Jack; first wife, Jane; and many other relatives.
