David Lee Lawrence ’59

David Lee Lawrence ’59 passed away on March 4 in Waterford, Michigan. He entered Dartmouth from Great Falls (Montana) High School. At Dartmouth Dave played freshman football and was active in a range of intramural sports. As a member of Kappa Kappa Kappa he was house manager and enjoyed participating in the fraternity hums. He took his love of singing with him to his church choirs. He particularly enjoyed attending Robert Frost’s readings on campus. Hazel, his wife of more than 50 years, read Frost’s “The Road Not Taken” and “Stopping By the Woods on a Snowy Evening” at Dave’s memorial service, where Dartmouth was prominently mentioned. After Dartmouth Dave earned a master’s in group work administration from George Williams College in Chicago. He worked for many years with YMCAs in Pennsylvania and Michigan and later as executive director of senior residential facilities. Dave enjoyed summer vacations camping with his family, sailing after concerts, especially near their cottage at Interlochen, Michigan. Hazel and their two sons, one daughter and six grandchildren survive him.
