David B. Smoyer ’63
David B. Smoyer ’63 died June 1 from complications of dementia. He was born in Akron, Ohio, and grew up in Princeton, New Jersey. He was raised to put education first and followed his student days by spending most of his career working for schools. He attended Phillips Andover, where he participated in baseball, soccer, and tennis, winning his graduating class’ scholar athlete award. At Dartmouth David majored in government, was a member of Green Key and Sphinx, and was a brother of Kappa Sigma. He earned nine varsity letters playing tennis and squash and was captain of the soccer team as first-team All-America 1962 goalkeeper. He was awarded the Kenneth Archibald Prize for all-around athletics and scholarship. He served Dartmouth as an class agent and a club officer. David received his law degree at Harvard University and practiced law for six months before joining the embryonic North American Soccer League as assistant to the commissioner before becoming the assistant athletic director at Yale. He then moved to Roxbury Latin School in Massachusetts as a coach, math teacher, and administrator for five years, followed by eight years as athletic director (and one-time head coach of women’s soccer) at Swarthmore College. He was rehired by Roxbury Latin, where he found a home as director of development for 10 years. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mary; three children; and seven grandchildren.
