David Allan Philhower ’79

David Allan Philhower ’79 died of a heart attack at his Rockaway, New Jersey, home on January 27, just weeks after his 63rd birthday. Dave attended West Morris Central High School in Chester, New Jersey, before matriculating at Dartmouth, where he majored in history and immersed himself in a wide range of activities. Affectionately known as “Coach” among his many friends, Dave played defensive back and safety on the Big Green’s 1979 championship football team and was a champion wrestler in the 152-pound weight class. A beloved member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Dave served on the ’79 council and the New Hampshire Association of Student Councils, played trumpet as a member of the select Dartmouth College Wind Ensemble, and acted as president of the Daniel Webster Legal Society. After graduation Dave returned to his home state of New Jersey, where he worked in the trucking industry and met Vicki Williams, the love of his life. They wed in 1989 and raised sons Jake ’21 and twins Dan and Ben. A master at building bridges among ’79s, Dave served as his class’ indomitable Dartmouth College Fund participation chair from 2004 until his death, a leadership run marked by consistent and unprecedented fundraising and participation success. Dave was a man of faith, a “humble giver” who put family and friends first. He was selfless, dedicated, passionate, kind, caring, and inspiring—a true son of Dartmouth who was loved by all who knew him. He will be deeply missed.
