David Alan Jenkins ’57

David Alan Jenkins ’57 of Burlington, Vermont, passed away on May 29 surrounded by his family. Dave graduated from Burlington High School. He majored in history, was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon (treasurer), played basketball, and was in the Glee Club. He fulfilled his military scholarship by serving in the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve. He worked full time for the Southern New England Telephone Co. by day and attended University of Connecticut Law School by night, completing his degree in 1965. Dave moved back to Burlington and was admitted to the Vermont Bar. He quickly became a partner in a local law firm. He was elected alderman and city counselor, then appointed Burlington city attorney in 1972. After practicing law for 14 years, he was appointed district court judge in 1979 and superior court judge in 1981, presiding over civil and criminal trials as one of nine judges who traveled in rotation to the 14 counties across the state. The appointments gave him the opportunity to see the state and serve each community. He formally retired from the bench in 2005 but was called on for the next five years. Two principles aligned throughout his life: service above self and a strong Christian faith. He was in Sunrise Rotary, a driver for Meals on Wheels, and deacon of First Congregational Church. He is survived by Susan, his wife of 62 years; daughters Lisa and Heather; and four grandchildren.
