Daniel Kniering Van Dorn ’52

Daniel Kniering Van Dorn ’52 died on March 6 at The Village at White River Junction, Vermont. Dan was born February 1930 in Orange, New Jersey. He grew up in Maplewood, New Jersey; graduated from Columbia High School; and earned an economics degree from Dartmouth. He was a member of Gamma Delta Chi. After serving in the occupation forces in Czechoslovakia and Germany from spring of 1953 until spring of 1956, he returned to Maplewood. There, he reunited and fell in love with Columbia High School classmate Julie Phillips Paddock. They were married August 3, 1957. The couple lived in the Bronx, New York, while Dan attended Columbia University Law School, graduating in 1961. When he began practicing as a trial lawyer the couple settled in Short Hills, New Jersey, and raised their family. Following his retirement in 2005, the couple moved to the Hanover area to be closer to family. He regularly provided physical, emotional, and intellectual support to his children and grandchildren. Julie passed away in 2018 and Dan moved to The Village in 2023. He leaves children Margaret ’80, Deborah, and Daniel and their families, including 11 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Other Dartmouth family members include brother Walter ’55 (deceased), son-in-law Timothy ’80, Th’83, and grandchildren Andrew ’15 and Elisabeth ’18.
