Class Note 1968. Hanover-based Ed Heald went through his extensive collection of Dartmouth memorabilia and shared the 1964-65 “General Reading Program Handbook,” which elicited classmate recollections. George Bell remembered having to write our first commentary on “Man’s Fate.” Jim Lawrie recalled that “Hoyle’s formulation of continuous creation of matter and energy appealed to me intellectually but was dead wrong.” Joe Grasso thought “the program ended early in winter term of freshman year.” David Peck admitted remembering only one entry, “The Martyred.” Speaking of memorabilia, admitted “former fanatic toy collector” Dave Gang forwarded a cane dealer’s remark that carved Dartmouth canes are highly prized by collectors. The above Mr. Peck chairs our arts legacy committee, which continues its valuable work. We recently received letters of thanks from fellowship recipient Solveig Lyssand and professors from the department of theater. Gerry Bell and WarrenRegelmann attended a lovely memorial service for classmate Bob Block, while Ced Kam, Richard Parker, Mark Waterhouse,Mr. Gang, and I zoomed in. John Pfeiffer flew down from Denver to Kansas City, Kansas, with Bev and grandsons to watch the Argentina-Algeria World Cup match and enjoy Messi’s hat trick. John Hamer shared his Father’s Day column from the Mercer Island Reporter and generated grateful memories from Bob Tannenwald, R. Barton Palmer, and Jim Frey. The Dartmouth Libraries alumni memorial book fund program has assigned and bookplated a title in honor of classmate Alan Thorndike, who died two years ago. Bob Reich forwarded a text of his commencement address at Berkeley, which generated a discussion about Dartmouth’s involvement in political issues. John Blair, Peter Hofman, Buddy Noel, Michael Chu, Sherwood Guernsey,Richard Parker, and Bill Kolasky participated. David Walden informed us of a new book about the Civil War by adopted classmate Bob Bonner. We’ll close as we opened, with nostalgia: Classmate Kolasky distributed an extensive list of ’50s-’60s radio and TV shows, to which Peter Temple, Rabbi Arnie Resnicoff, Noel Augustyn, John Sedwick, and Mark Waterhouse added titles. You can see that at our age, most classmate contact happens remotely, so join our email groups! Write me!
