Class Note 1959
Issue
July-August 2026
Class Note 1959. I had a delightful day with Donn Leaf in early March. Donn drove to Minneapolis from his home near Red Wing, Minnesota. We reminisced about our time at Dartmouth and our years at the Dartmouth Medical School (DMS). Out of 24 who entered DMS in 1958, there are only eight who are (or might be) alive.
Lee Gilliatt called from Shelby, North Carolina, in January to see if I was safe during the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement actions in Minneapolis. The killings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti were near to where I grew up and about two miles from where I live now. January and February were tense times in the Twin Cities. The demonstrations, marches, and rallies have not stopped but the stress and tension have abated.
Don Miller also lives in Shelby. Other living classmates include Tip Putnam in Hilton Head, South Carolina; Bob Danielson in California; and Bob Dimauro in Hawaii. Barry Smith has recently moved from Norwich, Vermont, to Cincinnati. Jim Groundwater practiced dermatology in San Francisco, but he has lost contact.
John Icke died February 22 in Madison, Wisconsin, where he grew up. At Dartmouth he joined Phi Delta Theta and graduated from the Thayer School of Engineering. He served in the Coast Guard before joining his family’s construction and real estate businesses in Madison. He and his wife, Karen, had two daughters, one son, and six grandchildren.
David Anderson died April 10. He joined Dartmouth from Queens, New York, and majored in Russian civilization. He joined Phi Kappa Psi and participated in Army ROTC. He served as a captain in a U.S. Army Airborne Division, where he was a paratrooper. He received a master’s in French from Michigan State and a Ph.D. in Romance languages from the University of North Carolina. His teaching career took him to Penn State and Denver University and the State University of New York at Oneonta, where he became dean of liberal arts. He and his wife, Carolyn, had two sons, one daughter, and four grandchildren.
