Charles Spurgeon Rowe Jr. ’79

Charles Spurgeon Rowe Jr. ’79 died on August 24, 2016. Known for his affable and altruistic nature, Charlie was a beloved husband, father and classmate. Charlie was born on December 27, 1956, and graduated from St. Christopher’s School in Richmond, Virginia. At Dartmouth Charlie majored in economics and engineering, was a member of Psi Upsilon and Casque & Gauntlet, went on the language study abroad to France and participated on the sailing team and the ’79 council. Charlie worked at The Dartmouth all four years and served as publisher as a senior. Peter Robinson ’79 notes that Charlie had “a nice, easy touch” and “held The Daily Dartmouth together during some contentious times.” After college Charlie earned an M.B.A. from the University of Chicago and worked in Chicago as a consultant and chief financial officer. He later returned to his hometown of Fredericksburg, Virginia, to work at The Free Lance-Star, where his dad had served as editor for 48 years. Charlie was very active in his community and a sports enthusiast who had recently competed in an Ironman triathlon. Steve Daniell ’79 writes, “Charlie was exceptional in the way he effortlessly combined strength of character, an appetite for hard work and a kind and easygoing nature. He seemed written from only meaning and substance.” Adds Doug Canning ’79, “Charlie was kind—all the way through.” Charlie is survived by his wife, Jennifer, sons William and Abe, daughter Margaret and many members of his extended family.
