Charles A. Schneider Jr. ’57

Charles A. Schneider Jr. ’57 died on April 27 from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Charlie graduated from Scarsdale (New York) High School. At Dartmouth he majored in engineering sciences business administration and in 1958 earned an M.S. and M.B.A. in the Tuck-Thayer program. He was a member of Beta Theta Pi, Newman Club, and Army ROTC (drill team), then completed six months of active Army duty. Charlie began a career at Union Carbide, where he worked for 23 years rising through the sales and marketing ranks with the company and moving his family to Los Angeles, Pittsburgh, Chicago, New York, Japan, and back to Scarsdale. In 1983 Charlie joined Potters Industries, a leading manufacturer of engineered glass materials for highways, airports, and other industry. As vice president he ran the domestic and international business units until retirement in 1996. In 1998 he moved to Santa Barbara, California, where he pursued tennis, paddle tennis, golf, and lawn bowling. He was a founding member of the cycling club, taking trips to Colorado, Montana, and Washington. He was a board member of the local multiple sclerosis society and a full-time caregiver for his wife of 55 years, Jane, who predeceased him. Charlie demonstrated loyalty to Dartmouth by serving as alumni fund participation agent, class agent, leadership agent, and fraternity/sorority agent for 26 years. He is survived by sons Scott ’85 and Kurt ’87.
