Charles H. White II ’57

Charles H. White II ’57 of Brunswick, Maine, passed away peacefully on August 9. Charlie graduated from Medina (New York) High School. At Dartmouth he majored in botany. He was a member of the Dartmouth Outing Club (a director as a senior), on the Winter Carnival Committee (serving as chairman as a senior), participated in the Yacht Club, served on the Undergraduate Council, and was an active member of Delta Upsilon. While at Dartmouth he sailed on a 100-foot schooner from Maine to Greenland with classmate Tony Williamson, a life-changing experience for Charlie, who moved to Maine. Charlie started his career in the family business, a large rose-growing operation in western New York. After two years he became a stockbroker in Portland, Maine, for 15 years. He returned to White Brothers Rose Co. as its president for five years. In 1979 he moved to Charlotte, North Carolina, and worked as regional salesman for Vaughan Jacklin Corp. As he wrote during his 50th reunion, “For these past 20 years I have lived with Susan on the shores of Casco Bay, just north of Portland, Maine. As I look out over the bay and see the sun rise over the islands, I take in the beautiful vista. I have trouble believing I am here in this perfect place.” He served the College as an alumni fund volunteer. Charlie is survived by his wife, Susan, three children, and cat.
