Charles Earl Updegraff II ’59
Charles Earl Updegraff II ’59 passed away on February 13 in Crawfordville, Florida, after a 10-month fight against melanoma. He grew up in San Carlos, California, and entered Dartmouth from Carlmont High School. Although he did not graduate with the class, he faithfully paid his class dues and supported Dartmouth Partners in Community Service, the class project at the Tucker Foundation. He joined the U.S. Air Force and served eight years in Peshawar, Pakistan; Clark Air Force Base in the Philippines; and Goodfellow Air Force Base in San Angelo, Texas. He was a Chinese linguist in the Air Force Security Service. Charles attended Yale University Institute of Far Eastern Languages and graduated in 1966 from the University of the Philippines with a B.A. in history. Eastern Airlines employed him until 1986, when the airline failed. After that Charles taught history at the Wakulla High School in Crawfordville. When he retired in 2010 he was working for the U.S. Postal Service in Crawfordville. Charles was an active member of the Crawfordville United Methodist Church, a founding member of the Wakulla Community Theatre and an enthusiastic supporter of the Boy Scouts of America. Charles loved the outdoors, and swimming was a lifelong passion. Mary, his wife of 48 years, says that his Dartmouth experience was one of his most treasured memories. He spoke often of his adventures with the Canoe Club, the cross-country team and going to the cabin at Mount Moosilauke. Mary, three daughters, a sister, two brothers, a stepbrother and seven grandchildren survive him.
