Charles Carroll Lund ’60

Charles Carroll Lund ’60,Ph.D., died of Covid-19 on November 30, 2020, at Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington, D.C. Born in Boston in 1938, Charles was the youngest of three brothers. He attended Middlesex School, Massachusetts, and at Dartmouth was part of the lightweight crew team and coached freshman crew. He was a member of the ski team, cross-country team, Army ROTC, Kappa Sigma, and Casque & Gauntlet. He graduated in 1960 with a major in philosophy and moved back to Boston, where he earned a master’s in English at Boston University. When he went on to earn his doctorate in English at Tufts University, he met Viola Berry, a master’s student at the Harvard School of Education who shared his love for learning. The two married and several years later moved to Montgomery County, Maryland, where they raised daughters Anne and Louisa. Charles took a job at the University of the District of Columbia and stayed there for 40 years until retirement in 2004. His greatest joy was when students went on to become published writers. Those who knew him said he had always been a student first. But the professor shed his teacher-like demeanor when he returned home. He whipped up dinners as the family cook, enjoyed playing with his grandchildren, and loved his family. He tutored middle-schoolers and traveled to India, Italy, and England. He is survived by Viola, their daughters, and grandchildren.
