Charles B. Ryan III ’51

Charles B. Ryan III ’51, a long-time executive in the rubber industry and then a self-employed accountant and consultant, died in his hometown of Salem, Virginia, on November 27, 2019. Chuck came to Dartmouth from Western Reserve Academy in Ohio, where he was a multi-sport athlete. At Dartmouth he earned varsity letters in swimming and was a member of the freshman soccer team and Theta Delta Chi. Upon graduation he joined Firestone Tire & Rubber Co. in its Ohio and Tennessee plants as a manufacturing manager. He moved to Mohawk Rubber Co., where a career highlight was his leadership in selecting a major new plant site in Salem, overseeing construction of the plant, and serving as general manager of the facility. Chuck retired in 1984 and reinvented himself by enrolling at Georgetown University and earning a master’s in accounting. He and his wife, Susan, opened an accounting and tax consulting business and, later, a sports shop in Roanoke, Virginia. A self-described “golf nut,” Chuck was a member of Hidden Valley Country Club in Salem and served on its board of directors. He is survived by Susan, whom he married within days of his Dartmouth graduation, four children, and five grandchildren.
