C. Jerome Underwood ’51

C. Jerome Underwood ’51, a 45-year veteran of the hardwood lumber industry, died on May 1, 2017, in Peterborough, New Hampshire, not far from Underwood Farm, his family’s homestead since 1796. Jerry’s work in the lumber industry included stints with the Atlantic Lumber Co., Kimberly-Clark Corp. and Bear Paw Lumber Corp. He managed lumber sales throughout the United States, Canada, Europe and Asia. He and his wife, Doris, lived in New Jersey and Massachusetts but their hearts were in New Hampshire. Late in his career they were based in Eaton, New Hampshire. They retired to Peterborough to be close to family and to Underwood Farm. Long walks in that special place, swimming in nearby Gilmore Pond and cutting trees and brush with his chainsaw were highlights of his later years. Sailing was another long-time pleasure. As a youth Jerry built his own sailboat and won racing trophies. Wherever he lived he was a generous, active citizen. In Eaton he served on the local planning board. At Dartmouth Jerry was a member of Theta Chi and attended the Tuck School. After graduation he served for three years in the U.S. Army as a Russian language specialist stationed in Germany.
