Bruce Bokor ’76

Bruce Bokor ’76 of Northampton, Massachusetts, died unexpectedly May 28, 2014, at his home. After Dartmouth Bruce went on to be a lifelong scholar, with a probing and compassionate intellect. He was a gifted athlete and at one time considered pursuing a career in professional soccer. He was trained in massage therapy and cranial-sacral treatment and had an abiding interest in psychology and the interplay between body and mind. Bruce traveled a dark and difficult path for much of his life. After many troubled years, he became an educator, devoted to the children he taught. He joyfully gave of his time, volunteering in schools in the Pioneer Valley in western Massachusetts. His ability to connect with and adapt a childlike perspective made him popular and effective at his work. He also volunteered at homeless shelters, soup kitchens and other local nonprofits. Bruce was a member of River Valley Market, a fan of local libraries, a participant in events at Pioneer Valley Shambhala Center and a member of the congregation of B’Nai Israel. Bruce’s friends knew him as a sensitive and compassionate companion and ally and delighted in his sense of humor, theatricality and playful engagement with life. Friends were inspired by his wide variety of interests and creative spirit. Bruce was an adept potter. He loved music, learning about people, NPR, The New York Times and playing chess. He was a great storyteller. Bruce explored his world with intelligence, depth and a big heart.
