Bill Cunningham ’78

Bill Cunningham ’78 died on March 21 in Boonton Township, New Jersey. Bill came to Dartmouth from Islip, New York, and lived in Lord his first year. “The evenings and nights spent in Lord were always entertaining” says Miguel Damien ’78. “Bill would often be the only sober person while we listened to music and caught up at the end of the day.” He was a government major and worked four years at WDCR. The fall of his junior year Bill was an advance man and driver for Joe Grandmaison’s campaign for the U.S. House of Representatives. (He lost.) After working for the government for a few years, Bill went to business school at Wharton. He then worked for Irving Trust, which became the Bank of New York. Bill retired in 2000 and focused on managing his investments. He frequently wrote articles for the investing site Seeking Alpha. He was active in the Dartmouth Alumni Association. “We cohosted many local Dartmouth Club events,” says class president David Dietz ’78, “plus he led our club’s wine tasting for at least a dozen years. He was also an engaged member of my local investment club.” Bill was an avid hiker who climbed some of the highest peaks in the world. He was also an amateur genealogist who traced his family’s roots through many generations and enjoyed visiting the villages where his forebears came from. He is survived by siblings Jim, Sue, Dan, and Linda.
