Bayard Johnston ’51

Bayard Johnston ’51 died on February 7 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He lived most recently in Pfafftown, a small community that is part of Winston-Salem, after spending most of his life in New Jersey. Bayard came to Dartmouth after serving as an enlisted man in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was a member of Delta Upsilon and ROTC. Following graduation he spent three years in the U.S Navy as a lieutenant (j.g.) on a destroyer. His professional life was spent as a software engineer and senior scientific programmer. He started with Systems Development Corp., which merged with Sperry Corp. to form Unisys, working mostly on large-scale, defense-oriented systems. He retired in 1991 from Nexrad, a network of weather radar installations. Family—which Bayard insisted included human, canine and feline members—was at the center of his life. His many interests included gardening, photography and woodworking with antique tools. His passion for classical music led to ventures in freelance recording and collection of hi-fi equipment. Bayard’s wife, Janet, predeceased him. Surviving are four children and two grandchildren.
