Barton S. Udell ’55

Barton S. Udell ’55 passed away on January 12 in Miami. Born in Philadelphia, Barton moved with his family to Miami Beach in the 1950s. He came to Dartmouth from Miami Beach High School. After a year in Hanover, Barton transferred to the University of Miami, where he won honors and became a national debate champion. He completed a law degree from the University before receiving a commission in the Army Judge Advocate General Corps. He left the service as a captain and began a successful career as an attorney in South Florida, specializing in real estate law and international tax law. Barton was a dedicated civic leader who served as president of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations and on the executive committee of the Cuban-American National Council. In 1981 Barton married Barbara Weiner and they formed a unique partnership that enabled them to travel the world on various cruise lines. Barbara gave presentations to passengers and Barton supported her with research and writing. Barton enriched the lives of all who knew him. He was a gifted raconteur, fond of telling stories, reciting jokes, sharing poetry, and taking great pleasure in conversations with all his friends.
