Showrunner David Benioff ’92 takes on a new ‘Problem.’

The man who brought Game of Thrones to HBO is set to deliver a new sci-fi epic to Netflix later this year. Based on a Chinese bestseller by Liu Cixin, 3 Body Problem centers on human contact with an extraterrestrial intelligence and the intriguing, oh-so-human reactions to the revelation that there’s something out there. “It’s a tricky adaptation,” says Benioff, who is shooting in Spain and England. “Luckily we managed to get the band together again, which makes things a little easier. We’re working with the same composer, production designer, VFX team, and casting director as we did on Game of Thrones. Collaborating with old friends helps, in part because we’ve developed a shorthand after all these years together.” The highly anticipated series does not yet have a release date. Bighead Littlehead Productions, Benioff’s production company with collaborator D.B. Weiss, signed a $200-million deal with the streamer in 2019. Their recent efforts include two comedies: The Chair, starring Sandra Oh, and Metal Lords
