Arthur K. “Pete” Birnie ’57
Arthur K. “Pete” Birnie ’57 passed away on November 18, 2020, after a long battle with dementia. A New Englander at heart, Pete was born and raised in Winchester, Massachusetts, and graduated from nearby Belmont Hill School. At Dartmouth he majored in economics and was a member of Zeta Psi and in the Army ROTC all four years. Pete was an industrial engineer. He started with Federal Paper Co., producer of recycled and bleached paperboard used to make packaging, brochure covers, sports cards, and paper cups. He had a long career in management and remained with the company when in 1995 it was acquired by International Paper, one of the world’s leading producers of fiber-based packaging, pulp, and paper. Pete retired in 1959 with 34 years of service. Pete and Barbara, his wife of 60 years, were longtime residents of Madison, Connecticut. For many years Pete was a member and played golf at the Madison Country Club, where he savored the lighthearted camaraderie and sincere fellowship with many on and off the course. They also had a home on Sheep Pond in Brewster, Massachusetts. They recently moved to the Evergreen Woods Community in North Branford, Connecticut. Pete is survived by Barbara, daughter Deborah, son Douglas, and five grandchildren.
