Archibald Duncan Gray Jr. ’60
Archibald Duncan Gray Jr. ’60 passed away on October 29, 2018, in Durango, Colorado, after a period of ill health. He leaves behind his loving family—wife Nina Gray; sons Duncan III, Matthew, Joseph, and Michael; and two grandchildren. Duncan was born in Houston on July 12, 1938. He moved to Pittsburgh, where he attended Shadyside Academy. At Dartmouth he was a member of Delta Tau Delta and the Spanish Club. He went on to the University of Michigan Law School and then NYU for his LL.M. Duncan always considered Houston his home, and he returned there to join the law firm Baker Botts. In 1983, after acclaimed work for United Gas Pipeline, Duncan opened the Houston office of Mayer Brown. That year he also met Nina. In 1996 he cofounded the Houston operation of Baker McKenzie. In 2008 British law firm Gowlings WLG sought him out as part of its global expansion efforts and he relocated to London, England. His fluency in Russian and comprehensive knowledge of the former Soviet Union underpinned his major business achievements. Duncan toured the world with the London-based Australian disputes lawyer J.P. Douglas-Henry. Wherever he traveled he played golf, including on courses throughout the United States, England, Scotland, Russia, and the Caribbean. As one of his Texan colleagues said, “The lion is roaming the savannah now.”
