Allan D. Walker ’55

Allan D. Walker ’55 passed away on January 31. He is survived by his wife, Joan, and children Allan, Mary, Melissa, Patricia, Suzanne, and Cassandra. He grew up in Woodstock, Connecticut. When he graduated from Woodstock Academy, Allan had no idea he would be returning to become headmaster (1960-80). It was part of a lifetime devoted to secondary school education. At Dartmouth he majored in geography and was a member of Phi Kappa Psi. After graduation he served two years as a Navy lieutenant before returning to Woodstock. Starting as a teacher for three years, Allan completed a graduate degree in education at the University of Connecticut before becoming headmaster. He was a prominent member of the National Association of Secondary School Principals, serving as president from 1975 to 1976. In 1980 Allan became principal of Litchfield (Connecticut) High School. He then served four years as superintendent of schools for the region. Allan was an active community leader throughout his life. He was a member of the board of directors of the Connecticut Junior Republic and chairman of the Goshen, Connecticut, board of finance for 21 years. A great lover of the outdoors, Allan was most at home as a gentleman farmer, tending his herd of Hereford cattle, which he treated as pets. He also enjoyed vacations with his family in the northern Maine woods.
