Alex Dougal Chisholm III ’68

Alex Dougal Chisholm III ’68 died of esophageal cancer on May 5 in Eugene, Oregon. Alex hailed from Marquette, Michigan. At Dartmouth he was a history major, member of Theta Delta Chi, and active in skiing and intramural sports. Next was a brief stay at law school in San Francisco, though he soon realized his passion was in design and building things, so he worked up from carpenter’s apprentice to master furniture and cabinetmaker. He also worked as a professional photographer. On one occasion he joined John Russell ’68 for a photography gig in 1970 at Lake Tahoe, California, where they photographed Olympic ski racer Jean Claude Killy. Alex lived in Ashland, Oregon, and later Eugene, where he worked in kitchen design, built a Corian fabrication business, and eventually worked in exhibit design. He also loved graphic design, calligraphy, and typography. He took a sabbatical from his career to study French at the University of Oregon for five semesters and later moved to France for one and a half years, studying the language and soaking up the culture in Anger and other regions. He reported: “I discovered that having the ability to live in another culture and comfortably speak the language is an enormously satisfying and enriching experience.” Alex is survived by his sister, Penny, and a host of friends.
