Alden Guild ’52
Alden Guild ’52 passed away on January 13 in Southern Pines, North Carolina, with Ruth, his wife of some 60 years, and daughter Heather ’82 by his side. Alden was born on July 3, 1929, in Boston and prepared for college at Kimball Union Academy in Meriden, New Hampshire. He entered Dartmouth with the class of 1952, but left to join the U.S. Air Force at the end of 1950. He was discharged from the service at the end of 1953 and returned to Dartmouth to graduate with the class of 1955. However, he always maintained his loyalty to the class of 1952. At Dartmouth Alden was a member of Theta Chi, graduating Phi Beta Kappa, magna cum laude and as a Senior Fellow. As an alumnus Alden was very active as a club volunteer and fundraiser, including service as president of the Association of Alumni from 1981 to 1982. He was recognized with the prestigious Alumni Award for his work for the College and in his professional life. Alden graduated from University of Chicago Law School in 1957 and immediately joined the law department of the National Life Insurance Co. in Montpelier, Vermont, where he served until retiring in 1990 as senior vice president and general counsel. Alden retired from McKee, Giuliani & Cleveland in Montpelier, where he was of counsel from 1990 to 1997. Alden also served as a trustee of Norwich University (1972-96), Dartmouth alumni councilor (1975-78) and with several other civic organizations.
