Alan Baldwin King ’83
Alan Baldwin King ’83 of Kalaheo, Hawaii, died peacefully on March 5 after a battle with lung cancer. Alan graduated from St. Edward’s School in Vero Beach, Florida. At Dartmouth Alan was a French major and a member of Gamma Delta Chi. Ted Branch ’83, who shared a triple in Russell Sage with Frank Davis ’83 and Alan, recollects Alan’s passion for plants: “Our corner suite was like a botanical garden. No wonder he moved to Hawaii to make his mark on agriculture.” Alan began with Alexander & Baldwin in diversified agriculture in Maui and then transferred to the McBryde Sugar Plantation in Kauai, which works with the Kauai Coffee Plantation Co. In 1987 Alan married Monica Latini ’84, and they had sons Andrew and Maximilian. In 2000 Alan retired from agriculture to devote his time to family and community. He served on local nonprofit boards, including the Wilcox Health Foundation, Island School, Kauai Junior Golf Association, Kukuiolono Golf Course, and the Mission Children’s Society, and coached two high school golf teams. As a loyal Dartmouth graduate he served many years as an admissions ambassador. He enjoyed spending summers with family and friends on Peaks Island, Maine. Rick Watts ’83 recalls, “Al never got upset, even when I mistakenly left one of his golf clubs behind on a golf course.” All his Dartmouth friends remember Alan’s generosity and contagious smile. He is survived by Monica, Andrew, and Maximilian.
