Norman Frank Swanson ’59
Norman Frank Swanson ’59 died on January 15 at his home in Westford, Massachusetts. Norm came to Dartmouth from Rutland (Vermont) High School. At Dartmouth Norm was a member of Zeta Psi, where he was the treasurer. In the Aegis Zeta Psi page it notes, “Our Hell Night ceremonies were enlivened greatly by ‘Samurai Swanson,’ but none of his 1959 brothers contacted can remember what the reference meant.” At the same time they remember him as a wonderful friend and brother. John Goodrich ’59 met Norm and wife Nancy last August in Camden, Maine, and says one could see why “Swanny” was probably the best-liked brother in the 1959 class at Zete. A four-year participant in the Naval ROTC program, he was on the dormitory committee as a freshman and played on the freshman football team. In his junior and senior years he represented Zeta Psi on the Interfraternity treasurers council. Norm completed Thayer School. After three years in the Navy he worked as a personnel manger for General Radio Co. (Concord, Massachusetts), worked in human resources for Computer Vision (Burlington, Massachusetts) and was a real estate broker for Century 21, Thor Realty, DeWolfe New England and Coldwell Banker (Concord). As a member of the board of directors of the USS Newport News (Virginia) Museum and Memorial Foundation, Norm was also curator aboard the USS Salem in Quincy, Massachusetts. He is survived by his mother and his wife, Nancy, who remembers Norm as a man of great wit, integrity and humanity.
