Mark Clayton Ewing ’59

Mark Clayton Ewing ’59 died on May 8 at his Hanover home with his family after a brief illness with cancer. At Deerfield (Massachusetts) Academy he competed in football, track and skiing. At Dartmouth he was a member of Theta Delta Chi and the football team. He earned a degree from the Harvard Business School’s executive program. He was a world-class sailboat racer, and participated in seven trans-Atlantic, Bermuda, Great Lakes and Chesapeake Bay races. He was invited to compete in the America’s Cup, but declined due to the time commitment. Mikie, his widow, feels their minister captured much of Mark’s character when he said: “It is clear to me just how he inspired friendship and camaraderie. If still waters run deep, then we need to marvel at just how still Mark could be. Remaining calm on a boat in the middle of a storm is not something that everyone can do. We remember his love of telling stories, and his devotion to his family and friends.” His business experience included founding Nautor Sailing Inc., an importer of Swan sailboats, and Lyme Angler of Hanover. He was a vice president of Palmer Johnson, a designer of ocean racing sailboats. Mark was a great outdoorsman and was most at home in the wilderness or on the high seas. He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Mikie, children Mark, William and Sarah, granddaughter Carly, stepson Eric and his daughter Aylea, who Mark considered a granddaughter.
