William Rice ’76

William Rice ’76 passed away on May 26, 2016, the College has recently learned. Billy came to Dartmouth from Eastern Senior High School in Washington, D.C., where he lettered in football, soccer, and baseball. At Dartmouth Billy played on both the freshman soccer and baseball teams and was a member of the Afro-American Society. He graduated from Dartmouth a year early, then received an M.A. in urban planning from the University of Chicago in 1976 and an M.B.A. from the Northwestern University Kellogg School of Business in 1987. Billy spent most of his professional life in banking, his last position as senior vice president of Harbor Bank of Maryland Community Development Corp. He was involved in several philanthropic organizations, including as a member of the National Black MBA Association, National Association of Urban Bankers, and Holy Trinity Episcopal Church; board chairman of the Greater Southeast Community Hospital; and president of the D.C. chapter of the National Association of Urban Bankers. He was also involved in the Black Alumni of Dartmouth Association and the friends groups of Aquinas House, Dartmouth baseball, and Dartmouth men’s soccer. Billy also served as an alumni interviewer and was a sponsor of the Duane J. Gibbs ’76 Memorial Book Fund, now known as the Duane J. Gibbs ’76 and William Rice ’76 Memorial Book Fund. He is survived by sons Xavier, Darin, and Daniel ’19.
