William J. Hubbard ’63

William J. Hubbard ’63 died on February 6 at Gadsden (Alabama) Regional Medical Center. William was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and grew up in Detroit, where he attended Cooley High School, served as football co-captain, and graduated cum laude. He graduated from Dartmouth with an A.B. in anthropology and was a brother of Delta Kappa Epsilon. He played football and was the coach and captain of the Storm Kings amateur hockey team. In 1971 William earned a master’s in library science at SUNY Geneseo and worked in libraries at SUNY Fredonia, Virginia Tech, and the State Library of Virginia. He spent the last 20 years of his career as university librarian at the Jacksonville (Alabama) State University Houston Cole Library and led its computerization efforts. In 2005 he was named Eminent Librarian of the Year by the Alabama Library Association. He retired as professor emeritus in 2008. His wife of 57 years, Barbara, and their three sons and families survive him.
