He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Ruta; daughter Diana and son-in-law George; daughter Heather and son-in-law Chad; son Gordon and daughter-in-law Stacy; daughter Elyzabeth; sister Nancy; and grandchildren Colin, Lara, Carter, Logan, Jacob and Connor. He was interred at the Oakland Memorial Cemetery and a subsequent memorial service and celebration of his life was held on October 12 at the Deep Creek Yacht Club in Oakland, Maryland. Additionally he was involved with WDCR, the Geological Society, the DOC and the Yacht Club, all harbingers of his future interests and avocations. Following Dartmouth he earned his doctoral degree in dental surgery at the University of Pittsburg, where he met Ruta. After his military service they moved to Deep Creek Lake in Garrett County, Maryland, where he opened his dental practice. Bill’s profession was dentistry and oral surgery, but his life encompassed far more than a busy family life and dental practice. He loved the out-of-doors in its wonderful array of beauty and opportunity. He was a successful farmer, an environmentalist, a hunter and fisherman, and an accomplished yachtsman as well as a skier—interests he shared with his children and grandchildren. Bill was a prominent and much admired citizen of Garrett County as well as an accomplished and admired 1960 classmate. Bill brought a zest and passion for life to all who knew him and will not soon be forgotten.
