William Barret Conway ’52
William Barret Conway ’52 passed away from congestive heart failure in Ochsner Hospital in New Orleans on December 14, 2015. Bill graduated from East Hampton (New York) High School in 1948. At Dartmouth Bill was a member of Beta Theta Pi and Dragon and was a varsity letterman in football. He stayed in Hanover for three more years, obtaining a master’s in civil engineering and serving as an instructor at the Thayer School of Engineering. He served in the U.S. Navy as a Seabee for two years before starting a long and successful career in civil engineering. Bill was a partner in Modjeski and Masters, a national engineering firm in New Orleans, from 1969 until his retirement in 2007, serving as CEO from 1992 through 2004. His career included many notable milestones and accomplishments, particularly in long-span bridge design. He received many engineering awards, including the Louisiana Lifetime Achievement Award and the John A. Roebling Medal for lifetime achievement in bridge engineering. Bill was also active in various New Orleans charities and civic organizations, as well as at Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, where he spent many summers in retirement. In 1955 he met Florance “Bonnie” Scott and they married in 1956. She survives him, as do children William Jr. ’79, Robert, Peter, Edward ’86, Elizabeth, Laura and Eleanor. He also had 19 grandchildren.
