William B. Gumbart Jr. ’50

William B. Gumbart Jr. ’50 died on May 2, 2010. While at Dartmouth he majored in sociology. During World War II Bill served in England and France with the Army’s 874th Ordnance Heavy Automotive Maintenance Co. Following graduation from Dartmouth he attended the Rutgers School of Banking. In due course he became a trust officer at the First New Haven (Connecticut) National Bank. During his business career Bill served as board member for Travelers Aid, the Institute Library, the Dartmouth Club of New Haven, the Walton Fishing Club, the Mary Wade Home, the Graduate Club and the North Haven (Connecticut) Congregational Church. On July 20, 1957, Bill married Elizabeth Cushman, who survives him together with their sons William, Thomas, Edward and David. Among Bill’s favorite activities were fly tying and fishing, hiking, yard work and being a devoted grandfather.
