Thomas Nolan Schroth ’43

Thomas Nolan Schroth ’43 died July 23, 2009, in Sedgwick, Maine. Tom graduated from the Wyoming Seminary in Kingston, Pennsylvania, before coming to Dartmouth, where he majored in English and was a member of Delta Tau Delta, Palaeopitus, Glee Club and Green Key; business manager of The Dartmouth; director of the ’42 Community Chest Drive; and active in WDCR/WFRD. Tom attended Tuck School and served in the Army Air Force. He was class secretary in 1972 and a class agent from 1961 to 1969. Tom started his journalistic career with Time magazine and United Press before joining The Brooklyn Eagle (founded by his father) as a reporter, then editor. After the paper’s demise he joined Congressional Quarterly, eventually becoming its executive editor. Under his guidance the Quarterly grew in importance as it documented and analyzed the U.S. Congress. Tom left the Quarterly in 1968 to become a founding editor of the National Journal. In 1972 Tom and his wife, Patricia, moved to Maine, where he continued his involvement with publications as editor of The Ellsworth American and founder of Maine Life magazine and New Life Publishers. Tom was also active in politics — as a member of the Maine State Democratic Committee he attended six national Democratic conventions — as well as a selectman of Sedgwick for five years in the early 1990s. He served on the board of directors of many Maine institutions. Tom is survived by his wife, Patricia; daughters Valerie, Jennifer, Anne and Amy ’84; and five grandchildren.
