Thomas Agan ’54

Thomas Agan ’54 passed on November 4, 2022. He came to Dartmouth from Lebanon (New Hampshire) High School and was a member of Zeta Psi and the men’s ski team. He joined the U.S. Air Force in July 1952, spending one year in Texas and three years at Mountain Home Air Force Base in Idaho. He returned to Dartmouth and graduated in 1958. He then settled in Paul Smiths, New York, and began a 25-year teaching career at Paul Smith’s College. There he taught history and government and politics and coached the ski team. He received his master’s in history from the University of New Hampshire and his doctorate in history from the State University of New York at Albany. In June 1985 Thomas retired from teaching and returned to the Upper Valley of New Hampshire. He got his real estate license and worked in that field for several years. His last job was supervisor of the reserve reading desk at Baker Library. Thomas was an avid runner, skier, and hiker. He ran several marathons, including the Boston Marathon twice, in the 1970s. Thomas loved hiking, especially in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. He was grateful for everything until the very end. Thomas is survived by Ellen, his wife of almost 64 years, and children Cathy, Christopher, and Kelly ’85.
