Steve J. Hudak ’65

Steve J. Hudak ’65 died on September 24, 2022, in Midlothian, Virginia. He came to Dartmouth from Wanaque, New Jersey. As an undergraduate Steve majored in engineering science, was treasurer of Alpha Chi Alpha, active in the Newman Club, member of Air Force ROTC, and played football (defensive tackle on the undefeated 1962 team). He was known as “Baby Huey” for his large size and gentle nature. Steve continued on to Thayer School, and upon graduation served in the Air Force in Okinawa and Vietnam. Following his discharge Steve accepted a position with the Army Corps of Engineers in Chicago. After 10 years there he transferred to Corps headquarters in Washington, D.C., where he was heavily involved in the long-range management and budgeting of several major civil works construction projects. He ably participated in congressional oversight of the Corps of Engineers. Following his retirement, Steve was an active volunteer. He was an AARP tax advisor, preparing tax returns for seniors who needed assistance. He served as treasurer for St. David’s Episcopal Church. Perhaps most notably, for 10 years Steve applied his problem-solving skills as a volunteer court-appointed special advisor, where he spoke for seriously abused and neglected children who are the subjects of juvenile court proceedings. His name is enshrined on the Chesterfield Senior Volunteer Hall of Fame plaque in the county administration building. Steve is survived by Maryanne, his wife of 57 years, and children Laura, Melissa, and Steven.
