Retrospective Writing
Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist updates essay he wrote before college graduation.
Fifty years ago, David Shribman was on the brink of graduating from Dartmouth and Marshall Brooks was about to graduate from Suffolk University. The two young men wrote a pair of essays published in the Boston Evening Globe in which they considered the meaning of higher education and how their college experiences might affect their futures. Shribman went on to become executive editor of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, and a nationally syndicated columnist, ultimately winning the Pulitzer Prize for his writing on American political culture. Now, upon the 50th anniversary of their graduations, the two men have updated their essays for The Home Forum in the Christian Science Monitor.
