Robert Stephen Ryan ’73

Robert Stephen Ryan ’73 died on November 19, 2016, in Los Angeles after a long struggle with prostate cancer. Bob came to Dartmouth from Wall High School in Wall Township, New Jersey. At the College he majored in history, sang in the Glee Club and was a member of the Marching Band. Bob also wrestled on the varsity wrestling team and acted with the Dartmouth Players. After Dartmouth Bob attended Albany Law School, where he earned his J.D. He was for a time an assistant prosecutor in Monmouth, New Jersey, before moving to Los Angeles to pursue a career in acting. Bob’s “day job” was as a law librarian at Hill, Farrer & Burrill LLP in Los Angeles, from which he retired in 2013. He began acting in Hollywood in the late 1980s in minor and supporting roles in motion pictures (Hotshot, Ladies in Waiting, Life or Breath and Life Tracker), television series (Love & War, Murphy Brown, Night Stand and Son of the Beach), regional theater and commercials. One of Bob’s more memorable roles was the Stephen Hawking-like character Professor Milosevic in 13 episodes of the FX sitcom series Son of the Beach (2000-02), a comedic sendup of the television series Baywatch. He regularly sang with the Los Angeles Lawyers Philharmonic & Legal Voices. Bob is survived by his sisters, Nancy and Virginia, their husbands and four nieces. Memorial donations may be made to the Los Angeles Lawyers Philharmonic (lalawyersphil.org/get-involved/donations).
