Robert Ellis Mower ’54

Robert Ellis Mower ’54 passed away in Charlottesville, Virginia, on February 21. Bob grew up and lived in Braintree, Massachusetts. He graduated in 1950 from Thayer Academy, Braintree, where he earned the 1949 Harvard Book Prize. At Dartmouth he was active in Zeta Psi, The Dartmouth, and the Ripley Society. He transferred to Harvard and graduated in 1955. After graduation he worked for the Los Angeles Times, then moved back to Massachusetts and worked in advertising. He owned The Hobby Horse Antiques in Marion for close to 50 years, moving to Rochester, Massachusetts, upon retirement. He created, owned, and managed Compass Antiques Shows. Robert’s previous experience in the communications and PR business with the Los Angeles Times, The Wrigley Co., and clients such as the Harvard Trust Co. was a factor in his success. He kept his association with Dartmouth in later years, serving as Alumni Fund volunteer and class agent. He treasured his many friendships throughout his life. He was widely known for unexpected gifts of local produce and homemade cookies and unexpected cards and letters. He was unfailingly kind and generous and a counselor to many who sought his advice. He is survived by his wife, Eleanor, son Marshall, and daughter Melissa.
