Richard Warren Plummer ’54

Richard Warren Plummer ’54 passed away on September 20, 2010. Dick entered Dartmouth from Plainfield, New Hampshire, having attended Kimball Union Academy. At Dartmouth he was a math major and captain of the rifle team. After graduation Dick reported to the Marines at Quantico, Virginia, and was commissioned a second lieutenant. He then served with the 3rd Marine Air Wing in Oppoma, Japan. Dick tried out for and made the wing rifle team, where he was awarded many medals and honors, including Distinguished Ranking, a gold medal at the National Matches and a gold at the Hawaii Nationals. In 1957 Dick was discharged from the Marines and returned to the Upper Valley, where in early 1958 he became assistant to the Dartmouth business manager. It was the start of his 35-year career at Dartmouth. He served as a liaison between the architect and the contractor and helped to complete Hopkins Center, the Wigwam dorms, Bradley/Gerry, Kellogg Auditorium, Leverone Field House and Remsen Hall. From 1963 to 1968 Dick served as purchasing agent, and in 1968 he became director of building and grounds, a position he held until his retirement in 1993. Dick is survived by his wife, Gloria, children Douglas, Bruce, Annette and Sheila and six grandchildren. The Dartmouth flag on campus was flown at half-staff for two days to honor his memory and service to Dartmouth.
