Richard Johnson Roby ’73

Richard Johnson Roby ’73 died on May 28. A native of Indiana, Dick prepared for Dartmouth at Kimball Union Academy in Meriden, New Hampshire. At the College he majored in English and was a member of Tabard. Following graduation Dick worked in N.Y.C., where he met the woman who would become his first wife, Laurie Fuller. In 1977 Dick received an M.B.A. from the Harvard Business School and moved to California to begin a career in banking. Returning to New England, he and Laurie lived for a time in Providence, Rhode Island, where their daughter Helen was born. After moving to Boston, where Dick would live for the balance of his professional life, son George was born. He married Kathleen McNeil and transitioned from banking to business consulting. Kathleen’s home on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, provided the opportunity for Dick to pursue gardening and build aquatic ecosystems for fish. Dick’s basset hound, Romp, was a loyal companion. During the final three years of his life Dick lived at his daughter’s home in Hingham, Massachusetts, where his granddaughters and a good game of Scrabble with his family enriched his days. Dick is survived by Helen and her husband, Josh; son George; and granddaughters Adelie, Evelyn, and Isla. He was predeceased by his father, William, class of 1938. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association, the American Civil Liberties Union, or the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
