Paul R. Staley ’51

Paul R. Staley ’51 died on January 5. He had been a longtime resident of the Philadelphia area, most recently in Media. He is survived by his wife, Joan, four children, two stepchildren and nine grandchildren. His brother, Alan, was a member of Dartmouth’s class of 1954. Paul was an especially active member of his class as an undergraduate. He captained the football team, was a member of Delta Tau Delta and Casque & Gauntlet, and an officer of the Undergraduate Council, the Interfraternity Council and his class. He was also a member of Green Key and Palaeopitus. He went on to earn a law degree at Harvard and was for three years a U.S. naval officer in the Seabees. Building on his love of engineering, Paul rose through the ranks of manufacturing management at Procter and Gamble Co. and later at Pennsylvania Quartz (PQ) Corp., a producer of silicate and engineered glass materials, where he became the CEO. He had a widely admired ability to think outside the box, authoring a book titled Questioning the Corporate Hierarchy. Paul served on the boards of several corporations as well as the Conference Board, the National Vision Foundation, the Upper Main Line YMCA and the planning commission in his hometown. He was a member of Dartmouth’s Alumni Council from 1966 to 1969 and an active Alumni Fund volunteer.
