Wylie T. Scott Jr. ’58 , M.D., died peacefully on April 13. Wylie came to Dartmouth from Pittsburgh, majored in zoology, was president of Sigma Nu, and served on the Interfraternity Council. Many years later, he wrote: “Perhaps a course like ‘Great Issues’ should be reinstituted for students to experience a group of diverse thinkers. It was the most influential course in my Dartmouth education.” He completed medical school at University of Pittsburgh with ’58 classmates John Hibbs and Russ Leslie. Wylie then served as a general medical officer in the U.S. Air Force in Chambley, France. Following a five-year residency at the Mayo Clinic, he practiced for a year in Salt Lake City, where he could both ski and work. In 1971 he moved to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and was a highly respected orthopedic surgeon for three decades, which included serving as chief of surgery at North Ridge General Hospital. Wylie dedicated his professional life to helping others regain mobility and return to the activities they loved. He took great satisfaction volunteering as a team doctor for the U.S. Olympic ski team. Wylie lived life with enthusiasm and curiosity and was an avid golfer, skier, and lover of roses and standard poodles. His wife, Ursula, predeceased him. Wylie is survived by one daughter, two sons, and five grandchildren.
