January-February 2026
William F. Gallagher Jr. ’57, M.D., passed away peacefully on November 5, 2025. Bill came to Dartmouth from Bulkeley High School in Hartford, Connecticut. He was premed, worked on the Aegis (faculty editor), and was a member of Alpha Kappa Kappa, Newman Club, and Yacht Club. He went on to earn his medical degree from Harvard Medical School in 1959. Bill served in the U.S. Navy as a lieutenant and was assigned to the U.S. Naval Academy from 1963 to 1965. He specialized in dermatology and worked at Massachusetts General Hospital for many years before establishing a well-regarded practice in Quincy, Massachusetts. “The big event of my life was three years in Saudi Arabia as chief of dermatology in Taif, the summer capital and at the number two hospital in the country,” he said. He settled in Bangor, Maine, for his remaining career. Bill’s avocation was writing about the intertwined lives of Bangor native Waldo Pierce, an artist and ambulance driver in World War I, and longtime friend Ernest Hemingway. Bill wrote articles on Waldo and Ernest for Harvard Magazine and The Hemingway Review. He gave presentations at the Hemingway Society and had a minor collection of Waldo’s works. He was an avid sailor, skier, and tennis player. Bill is survived by his former wife, Diane; son William; daughters Maura, Claire, and Katherine; and grandchildren.
