Thomas N. Hazen ’57 passed away on February 16. Tom graduated from Westminster School in Simsbury, Connecticut. At Dartmouth he majored in architecture, belonged to Gamma Delta Chi, and participated in the Dartmouth Players. In 1960 he earned an M.B.A. from Columbia University. He returned to his hometown of Holyoke, Massachusetts, to join Hazen Paper Co., founded by his grandfather. He spent 40 years in management of the company, expanding into holographic production and pushing forward despite the offshoring, economic upheaval, and plant shutdowns that plagued manufacturing. In retirement he was active in nonprofit organizations in the Holyoke area. He was on the board of the Holyoke Medical Center, a member of the Holyoke Public Library’s investment committee and the mayor of Holyoke’s industrial development committee, and active in Rotary and the local taxpayers’ association. He was a member of the First Congregational Church and served on its investment committee. In 2001 Tom earned The Dwight Award, given annually to a distinguished servant of the greater Holyoke community. In the broader Massachusetts area, Tom was active in several organizations encouraging local, state, and national governments to be friendly to business. In 2018 Tom was slowed by medical challenges but was able to live independently for many years in his trusty wheelchair. Tom was predeceased by his wife, Jane, and son Thomas. He is survived by children John (now president of Hazen Paper Co.) and Maria.
