Robert W. Queeney ’68
January-February 2026
Robert W. Queeney ’68 passed away peacefully in his sleep on the morning of September 30, 2025. Born the youngest of three sons on December 4, 1946, he was raised in Melrose, Massachusetts. At Melrose High School he excelled in football, track, and hockey and served as class president for three years. At Dartmouth Bob majored in government and was a member of Phi Delta Alpha and Sphinx. An old back injury prevented him from serving in the armed forces so following graduation he spent a year doing construction. While attending law school in Chicago, Bob worked as a male model, allowing him to graduate debt-free with a J.D. from Northwestern University. He spent the first eight years of his legal career as a public defender for the City of Chicago, predominantly as part of the prestigious homicide task force, where he devoted his time to saving defendants from the death penalty. Bob was most proud that he had won eight murder trials in a row in the 1970s as a public defender and gained the nickname “Houdini Queeney.” He joined a medium-sized civil law firm and “tried everything from antitrust to zoning” from 1980 to 2005, leaving when the firm became multinational. He continued to defend the rights of others through his private practice until his death. Bob is survived by children Robert, Maggie, and Alex; daughter-in-law Kate; two grandchildren; and brother Stephen. He was predeceased by daughter Courtney.
